It all began in 2004. Five college buddies teamed up to live the indie rock dream, their hearts firmly set on writing and producing their own music to adhere to their DIY ethics. The groundwork for the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (or CYHSY) was laid by guitarist/vocalist Alec Ounsworth and guitarist/keyboardist Tyler Sargent in Massachusetts, and soon after the group moved to Brooklyn (with Ounsworth nearby in Philadelphia) to begin songwriting and working on a four-track demo.
Still unsigned, their self-titled debut longplayer swiftly followed in 2005; a self-produced, self-released, self-promoted and self-distributed release, that caused a blog frenzy and saw CYHSY spearheading the new trend of becoming a ‘buzz band’. Renowned music site NPR even wrote up a feature on the emerging phenomena, with CYHSY as the prime example, and Pitchfork gave them a ‘Best New Music’ recommendation. The mainstream was quick to pick up on the hype, with Rolling Stone naming them 2005’s ‘Hot New Band’. The ensuing demand for the album was so great that the band was forced to repress the CD, as the initial production run was too small.
By the end of the year, UK-based Wichita Recordings signed the band. Ounsworth dabbled with his side project Flashy Python and the Body Snatchers while Greenhalgh's Guns N’ Roses tribute band Mr. Brownstone packed it up in June 2006. The rest of that year found the group (and new label) leaking out a few EPs before they hit the shelves with their second full-length, ‘Some Loud Thunder’ in 2007. The album was produced by Dave Fridmann, known for his work with Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips.
More was to follow, including an iTunes release of the band’s full Lollapalooza performance in 2007 and an appearance in the film, ‘The Great Buck Howard’. Rumours began to emerge that CYHSY had abandoned plans to head into the studio to record their third full length release, but a performance of ‘Statues’ on Jimmy Fallon’s TV show put all doubts to rest.
Produced by John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Okkervil River, The Mountain Goats), new release ‘Hysterical’ is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s first new album in more than four years. The album is currently heralded by an exclusive video teaser trailer, streaming now at the band’s official website, www.clapyourhandssayyeah.com and will be released on the 12th September on V2 Records.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will celebrate the release of “Hysterical” with a series of live appearances, their first since 2009. Their live schedule features a number of international festivals and European headline dates, with September stops set for Sheffield, Brighton, London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne with more shows to be announced soon.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are also announcing plans to reissue its classic self-titled debut album, remastered for this exclusive vinyl-only release on 14th June.
